We are not attending Burning Man this year, but we hope to see you back on the playa soon.

Why panties?

So what the heck is this all about, anyways? Why do we make stuff out of panties? Oh, come on! Because it’s funny! And if you didn’t already pick that up you are in need of a serious injection of a sense of humor! But, after you’ve gotten out all of your giggles, read on, because there’s more to our silly little camp than meets the eye.

The History of Panty Camp

The History of Panty Camp Panty Camp originally started as one of those ‘wouldn’t it be cool if...’ Burning Man dreams. In planning for their first year at Burning Man, in 2001, Nadja, Will and Josie of Panty Camp were overwhelmed with inspirations of how to contribute to the Burning Man community. After throwing around ideas of building robots, giant vaginas, and robotic giant vaginas, Will’s suggestion of a tent made of panties instantly struck a chord with Nadja and Josie’s feminist art sensibilities. The vision was born, a great white panty of inspiration shown down from the heavens, a choir of elastic waistbands sang, ‘twang’, and there was no turning back. Panty Camp must be! And so it was.

Further Musings of the Meaning of Panty Camp

Seeing so many panties in one place immediately will make you giggle. It’s absurd, surreal and improbable, but, yet, it exists! The silliness and the spectacle was always our first intention in the creation of Panty Camp. But we are pretty radical ladies at heart, and had other motives at work, too.

Panties are culturally something to remain hidden. They cover our ‘naughty’ bits, our ‘privates’; they are our ‘unmentionables’. We’re selective about who sees our panties and who doesn’t, and, for most adult ladies, that means the wearer and the wearer’s lover. As the final barrier between foreplay and sex, panties have become highly sexualized. But even more private are the panties women wear just for themselves, and don’t share with others.

Spend a little time in the Panty Pavilion and you’ll begin to notice the diversity of panties that surround you. Ladies express many aspects of themselves through their choices of panties. Women choose to be comfortable, sexy, cute, practical, durable, smart, humorous or demure and yet all of these qualities remain neatly hidden in our pants. Because the panties we wear are only meant for our own eyes and the eyes of a few intimate friends, panties can really say quite a bit of how we feel about our true selves. Panty Camp proudly glorifies all of these feelings, as well as celebrating the wonderful diversity of shape and size of all women. All panties are beautiful, as all women are beautiful. .

What Panty Camp is not

Panty Camp’s not really all that kinky. There are plenty of kinky camps on the playa that do a much better job at kink than we do. Don’t get us wrong, we love sex, but we’re not really fetishizing our panties. In a way, we’re de-fetishizing them. We’re trying to expose the diversity of our private selves. This absolutely includes the glorification and empowerment of our sexual selves, but, as represented in the variety of panties that make up Panty Camp, it also includes so many other shades of our personalities. So wave your panty in the air, be it a frilly ruffle butt, lacey thong, or high-waisted cotton, and be proud of who you are on the inside!
